Style SEEN: Nicole Bridger’s Love Local Launch

Nicole Bridger Love Local

Last week we had the chance to check out Nicole Bridger‘s Love Local launch event. The idea behind Love Local was to invite in a variety of local designers who share Nicole’s philosophy to also share her retail space to promote for Valentine’s Day.

One of the first designers that caught my eye was, interestingly, a children’s wear line called Red Fish Kids. The brand has been around for 8 years and although I have heard of it before, I have never interacted with the product. And it didn’t take long for me to fall in love with the line.  Designer Lorraine Kitsos was inspired by an Asian aesthetic, as she had lived in Hong Kong for 3 years. You can see it in her kimono style dresses, mini swing Qi Paos, and use of Chinese button knot closures. We love the Flor de la Vida bubble dress that can pretty much be worn inside out!

We met Hiroko Kobayashi and Neil Prakash, a pair of architects with a knack for their designs to manifest much sooner than the construction of a building, they turned to jewelry design. Hiroko and Neil design the jewelry while a silversmith in Japan creates the final works of art. What I love about hk + np studio is that even without knowing what their background is, you can appreciate the architecture in their designs. I quite enjoy their Twist series, inspired by the ripple effect. What I see is that the meaning of a ring is given much more depth. Traditionally, a ring symbolizes eternity, as there is no defined beginning or end. But the Twist series ring shows an ‘eternal’ fluctuating curvature, which to me signifies ups and downs in a relationship, which is totally natural and should be expected rather than a linear ‘happy ever after.’

Mary Cardi buttoned up twice

Mary Cardi buttoned up twice

Having been a big supporter of Nicole Bridger for the longest time, I finally now own a piece. I went for the Mary Cardi, which I can wrap myself in it about 5 different ways. There’s a button behind the neck which allows the ends of cardigan featuring 2 buttonholes to connect. I debated it for a while: I have about 3 other similar style cardigans in my closet, and who doesn’t know I have a ton of black already – did I really need another long-sleeve drape cardigan? The cincher was the fabric. Made of super soft modal fleece, I felt like I was ‘cheating’ the audience by looking good in so many different ways, when in fact I was wearing fleece! I told just about everyone on the NB team they have to bring back this fabric next fall season; crossing my fingers that they do!

Knixwear packaging

I also tried on a pretty set of Knixwear sweat resistant underwear. Even though I’m not a fan of lace, the Knixy Boyshort and Knixy Thong were super comfy!

Other featured designers at Love Local include AATMA crystal energy line, Urban Body Organics, Mellifera Bees (beautifully packaged honey), Jackson Rowe scarves, and Twenty One Tonnes artisan home décor, and of course for Valentine’s Day, Cocoa Nymph chcolates. These designers get to ‘live’ at the Nicole Bridger store until the end of February, so stop by to check them out!

Nicole Bridger is located at 2151 West 4th Ave in Kitsilano.

We had a Blast Hosting Dynamite’s Best Dressed Shopping Party!

This post was sponsored by Groupe Dynamite.

Yesterday night, Aurora & I had a fabulous time hosting the Dynamite Best Dressed shopping party at Metrotown! We got the chance to meet a lot of Dynamite shoppers, some who were shopping for their girlfriend’s birthday, some had a pre-paid shopping spree from their dad (jealous!), some were regular shoppers.

We got to try on the latest collection from Dynamite, and ended up with some fantastic pieces ourselves! Aurora got that sexy black & white damask dress that I also wanted (no more sz XS, too bad) along with a skir in this season’s hottest colour, oxblood, and couple of bling necklaces. I ended up with a bag full of black & white goodies – the printed skirt in the photo above, a black tank, shiny black leggings, and a b&w fashion sweater with the lettering “C’EST LA VIE.”

We had a great experience working with everyone at Dynamite! And thanks to everyone who followed our live Instgram, Twitter, and Facebook updates – you are all #DynamiteBestDressed!

We All Shopped ‘Til We Dropped with LOULOU Magazine at Metropolis!

The Metropolis atrium: Where the action was

The Metropolis atrium: Where the action was

Please note: This article was first posted on Metropolis at Metrotown’s blog. Thanks Metropolis for inviting me to the fabulous event. Check it out!

On Thursday, September 26th, LOULOU Shop ‘Til You Drop took place at Metropolis at Metrotown, and it was one of the mall’s biggest events ever! Over 70 retailers participated in this one-night-only shopping event, including Forever 21, H&M, Nike, Skoah, Bench, Geox, and more. According to a Metropolis marketing associate, there were approximately 700 guests in line for a swag bag before the event began!

Inside the main atrium court, there was a plethora of fun activities and free stuff, I had overheard many guests say that the lineup was long, but it was well worth the wait. Shoppers got the chance to sample lots of treats, check out different sweets at a candy bar, and pick up copies of LOULOU Magazine.

When I spoke with LOULOU Style Editor, Claude Laframboise, he said he’s done many events around Canada, but this one at Metropolis was the biggest one yet. He loved how energetic the shoppers were, and was genuinely impressed by the event.

Guests had the opportunity to check out the curated LOULOU closet. Many participated in the contest by taking a photo of themselves with their favourite item in the closet and Tweet it. Presentations by Claude Lafraomboise took place twice that evening, with guests attentively learning how they can create a fall wardrobe and best shop the event.

Kid Carson and SONiC Nation also broadcasted live on location. Between broadcasting duties, Kid Carson also helped hand out Skinny Cow ice cream bars to fans. What a great sport!

I met the lovely Sofia who happily showed me her latest purchase: a Dynamite knit cardigan that retailed at $44.90 with a 20% Shop ‘Til You Drop discount. She loved how it was so comfy and perfect for fall.

loulou editor's picks: fall boots!

LOULOU Editor’s Picks at Guess: fall boots!

At each Shop ‘Til You Drop participating retailer, there were tags on items indicating LOULOU Magazine’s Editor’s Picks. Some of my favourite Editor’s Picks at Guess? were these awesome black boots. And of course you can’t just have one! You need a pair of flat boots for everyday wear, and a lace-up pair with a heel for the weekend.

Shoppers Kama and Sima enjoyed the free swag

On my way to the other side of the mall, I met shoppers Kama and Sima. They loved the Skinny Cow ice cream sandwiches and were looking forward to open their gift with purchase.

There was so much to be coveted at Thomas Sabo! This display of cute bow-tie accessories was my absolute favourite. Which girly girl wouldn’t love a pair of bow-tie earrings?!

Fashion bloggers Jordana and Sheila pick up some fall must-haves at oak + fort for 20% off

Fashion bloggers pick up some fall must-haves at Oak + Fort for 20% off

At Oak + Fort, I met fashion bloggers from JustJ.ca and MaddyLoves.com. Apparently we had been Twitter friends for the longest time, so it was nice to finally meet them in person! Jordana said she loved her cozy, new Oak + Fort sweater, and Sheila said she was really enjoying the event at Metropolis.

At the end of the night, after shoppers had gone around the mall with their official Shop ‘Til You Drop passport, and had collected at least 8 stamps from retailers, they entered their ballot in for a draw. Good luck to everyone who participated! The grand prize was a $1000 Metropolis at Metrotown gift card, and other prizes included $100 gift cards to Garage, GUESS?, Forever 21, SoftMoc, H&M and more.

As for myself, I did a little shopping myself. I couldn’t resist a pair of skinny pants from Jacob at 25% off, a pair of winter running tights from lululemon, and a sweater dress from Forever21.

What a great event – I can’t wait to Shop ‘Til I Drop next year!

Style SEEN: m0851 Gastown’s 1 Year Anniversary

Fuji "polaroids" were part of the fun

Montreal-based leather goods retailer, m0851, celebrated 1 year at their Gastown location on June 15th, 2013. Guests were treated to mini cupcakes, David’s Tea, and fun Polaroid pics. Check out Aurora and I holding the m0851 block!

Without fail, the fantastic staff are always there to make your experience a good one, whether or not you end up purchasing something at the store. Their motto is to have fun with the product, and I believe this is the way sales should be! Even though I haven’t bought anything from the store, it’s always at the back of my mind for when I do decide to save up for a non-Mackage leather jacket (I love our other fabulous Canadian line of leather jackets too, but the styles are too commonplace now!). And that $800 price tag is slowly starting to seem more reasonable; I swear I’m not deluding myself!

I got the chance to reconnect with store manager Kimberly Pao, who luckily had her immediate family visit her from Toronto during the weekend of m0851’s one year anniversary. Honestly, I don’t know how that woman manages 2 locations! I had enough work cut out for me with one. But having been with the company for over 10 years starting out in Toronto, you can definitely see it’s passion that drives her.

Aurora & I also got a chance to play dress up! She’s wearing a light brown jacket ($850) while I tried on the Perfecto ($780). We might look a bit stiff in the arms, but that’s only because the leather is so new. We only had to check out the wall of the staff’s personal collection to see how well the leather wears throughout the years. Kim said most of the items were hers. I don’t doubt it :)

Congrats to the m0851 team to a great first year in Gastown and many more to come!

Style SEEN: Moule Yaletown Grand Opening

Treana Peake signing Sue's Obakki piece!

When Moule held their Grand Opening party, the highlight was definitely seeing style darling Sue Ennis excitedly get her unique Obakki editorial piece signed by designer Treana Peake. In fact, she tracked it down after seeing it in the Obakki catalogue, and miraculously found one of three ever made!

In attendance were Michael Gorenstein and his adorable young son, Sabine Costello, Moule District Manager and Julia Cathcart, designer for Rachel Mara. Also to be seen were store manager Mara Maldonado and blue-haired associate, Hiiro Prince. And of course, the lovely Sue Ennis.

We were all delighted by the vintage popcorn and hot dog machines, confectionary table, and great atmosphere.
