Tuesday evening the Style by Fire team had the opportunity to learn how to get ‘skin happy’ at Bare Essentials Skin Bar on Richards street. When I arrived I was greeted by friendly faces and industry experts. I then received a tour of the skin bar and browsed a variety of event perks, including food, wine, and even a photo booth! I was able to view products and speak to professionals, learning different ways to achieve ‘skin happy’ skin.
I was introduced to Shantelle Robb, a dermatology expert here in Vancouver. She taught me neat tips and tricks for my skin and introduced me to the skincare line Dermalogica. Upon asking about her biggest skin care advice, I was surprised with her response of “picking your skin’s favourite foods.” Shantelle went on to describe how certain foods are beneficial to specific skin types, “Pineapple is a great solution for oily skin because the enzymes exfoliate your skin from the inside out.” Most women (myself included), do not realize that good care of the inner skin will significantly increase the appearance of your outer skin.
After gaining insightful information from Shantelle, I had an opportunity to chat with Skye Lintott, who is not only a sales rep for PRIORI skin care, but a former member of The Real Housewives of Vancouver. She discussed her background in esthetics and skincare as well as her passion for ‘beautifying’ women. Her eyes lit up while talking about PRIORI, “I love working in the makeup industry because every woman loves to be beautiful.” Skye shared how easy it is to represent such an amazing brand. The products spoke for themselves as Skye was giving free mini treatments at the event.
Cleverly named after cocktails and drinks, Bare Essentials’ services range from target treatments to de-stress & relax remedies. The most popular menu item? The Mai Tai facial which hydrates customers’ thirsty skin with ingredients that reveal dewy and fresh skin. Not only did I receive an awesome gift bag on the way out, the entire Style by Fire team left with knowledgeable insight we can apply on a day-to-day basis.

Aurora & I were treated to facials at the new Bare Essentials Skin Bar (aka BE Skin Bar) in downtown. Owner Amy Sahota worked on my skin while “skintender” Shantelle helped Aurora. The first thing we did upon arrival was to fill out an extensive survey not only about our skin but about our behaviours, actions, and goals. Some unexpected questions include: Rate your stress level; Do you have a tendency to redness; How much water do you consume weekly; and what are your skin care goals?
After the ladies got a good idea of how our skin is like, we were treated to the Vantini, BE’s signature target treatment that resurfaces, smoothes, and brightens skin. In the facial cocktail mix was hydroxy acids to lift away dead skin cells, lactic acids to stimulate cell renewal, and peptides to prevent aging. Amy suggests this to anyone who hasn’t gotten a facial in a while because it’s their deepest exfoliation treatment
During my 30 minute Vantini, Amy walked me through my skin type, what my daily skin regimen at home should be, and analyzed the 14 different zones on my face. She also gave me advice on parts of my skin with pigmentation, suggesting Dermologica’s Chromo White trx C12 Concentrate ($117.00) and Chromo White try Extreme C ($110.50). I loved how I had found a solution to my pigmentation, but decided that if I were to go through with this consistent regiment, I’d wait until fall.
When asked about her recommendation for Style by Fire readers to protect their skin from summer sun, Amy says the solution lies in hydration! If you’re interested in Dermologica products, this is her skin care tip: “On a clean, damp face, apply a few drops of Skin hydrating booster, then apply Age smart MultiVitamin Power Recovery Masque for 10-15 minutes (loaded with vitamins A C E and F) twice a week. Hydrated skin needs less make up too, perfect time saver.”
On Saturday, June 22nd Metropolis at Metrotown kicked off “Get Polished,” the mall’s summer nail polish workshop series. This was the first of three workshops, called “Find What You Love,” took place over Saturday and Sunday. Shoppers got a chance to sit down, relax, and get their nails did!
There were many adorable mother-daughter participants who watched the step-by-step video while carefully applying their own polish. The end result was a beautiful chevron pattern! Many were already happy with their first coat of purple polish. Just take a look at cute little Sophie showing off her painted thumb with the help of her mom, Justine.
Because there were so many layers to the chevron pattern, a super fast drying top coat called Seche Vite was used. And let me tell you now, this product is amazing! It seriously only takes less than a minute for your nails to completely dry; they look extra shiny too. And want to know how the chevron pattern is done? Quite simply, once the base layer is pained on, stick two reinforcements (yes, your good ol’ school supplies) to form a heart shape and polish on your second layer. I can’t speak for every stylish woman reading this post, but I for sure learned something new.
Did you miss the first workshop? The second and third series take place during the following dates and three workshops run daily from 11am, 1:30pm, and 4pm. All workshops are by donation to Beauty Night-Burnaby. Register at Customer Service for workshops – you get swag bags, nail trivia, prizes and more!

Beauty Council‘s fourth annual Show Off event, a celebration of hair fashion, took place at the Vogue Theatre on March 25, 2013. Sponsors such as L’Oreal, AG Hair and CityTV helped to make this fabulous event happen, partial proceeds of which were donated to the local charity Look Good Feel Better. Renowned salons from across BC each had a chance to ‘show off’ their latest innovative hair designs. The evening’s MC was Breakfast Television’s Dawn Chubai, who along with giving away a plethora of raffle prizes, announced that a total of $5000 was raised. Way to go Beauty Council and all the supporters!
I had never been to a hair fashion show before and wasn’t sure what to expect. What a spectacular and inspiring series of vignettes, with each salon showcasing how far the creative potential of hairstyling can really go. Tonic Hair Salon’s story told of an epic battle amongst the different forces of nature, represented by elaborate corn braiding, coral reef-like tentacles and a dream weaver perched on top of the head. Union Salons sent out a bevy of silver cyborgs with literally out-of-this-world hair structures.
L’Oreal Professionnel featured a fun retro 50’s musical dance number with corresponding retro updo’s with an updated twist. Michael Levine Salons had white ethereal male creatures with prosthetic breasts and hair flowing out of various parts of their body come gliding out on roller skates. You had to be there to see it. The creativity showcased and joyous energy of the models were magnetic and refreshing. The participants were asked to show off and show off they certainly did.
Holt Renfrew hosts a beauty night featuring Spring 2013 product previews, makeup brush cleaning service (only 2 per person!), hand massages, paraffin treatments… and more! Tickets are $25* each and are redeemable towards beauty purchases of $75 or more on the night of the event.
